Nauthiz, the Rune of Necessity

****New Content Added Daily****

Meaning: need   Phonetic equivalent: 'n'

Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem

Trouble is oppressive to the heart;
yet often it proves a source of help and salvation
to the children of men, to everyone who heeds it betimes.

Norwegian Rune Poem

Constraint gives scant choice;
a naked man is chilled by the frost.

Icelandic Rune Poem

Constraint
grief of the bond-maid
and state of oppression
and toilsome work.

Nauthiz
Cala Gobraith, 2009

Nauthiz is the
need-fire burning within.
Neglect flickers it dim.
Nurturing nuggets of nourishment are
necessary to fanning hope alive again,
nudging the spirit to regain strength.
Nauthizi are the necessities for keeping body and spirit healthy.

Krasskova sees desperation, desperate courage, tight binding, need-fire, endurance in face of emotional shattering, survival, and loyalty as aspects of Nauthiz.

To Aswynn, Nauthiz represents need/necessity, a plea for help, need-fire, the friction and resistance that generates creative energy, the generation of action and change to meet or fulfill needs and the insight and motivation to heal from past traumas.

Melville considers Nauthiz as representing personal needs, self-preservation, invention, warning against greed, excess and impatience, spiritual needs, deliverance from distress, self-mastery, transcendence and as a compulsion that forces us to work in order to survive and evolve. Associations: deity- Nornir, tree- beech, plant- bistort, animal- squirrel, bird- none, zodiac/astrology- Capricorn/Saturn, color- black, element- water/ earth.

For Oswald, this rune has aspects such as need, want, craving, demand, deprivation, compulsion, desire, hardships, adversity, perseverance to endure, reserves of inner strength and patience. Associations: deity- Skuld, tree- rowan, plant- snakeroot, zodiac- Capricorn, color- black, element- fire, stone- lapis lazuli.

Paxson sees this rune's aspects as including need/necessity, constraint, frustrations, blocks and problems that may become opportunities for growth.

Nauthiz is another special rune for me because this is the collective that 'chose' me, so to speak and is the rune that plays the biggest part in who I am. To me, this is the rune of need and necessity.

Meditation associations: Need, fear, hopelessness and futility, desperate scrabbling, hungry mice, metallic scent, necessity, source of stress, even most basic of needs stressful.
